Ooh, that's a corporate dystopian take that hadn't occurred to me and now seems very plausible! I had the impression from the fact that most of the authority figures in the series - Mensah the planetary leader, Seth, ART's captain, Iris, ART's important person, even Leonide - are all people of colour, that it was a society that had got past prejudice on the basis of colour. (And also sexuality and gender.) But the idea that it's still lurking there in maybe the creation of SecUnits as some kind of perfect white army of cops is very chilling.

It may be that they thought it would be less fraught to explore the slavery aspects with a character who was white. At least I hope they will be exploring the slavery aspect of it instead of the robocop side :)
