Adding icons

I figured I should support DW with a paid account if I don't want it to either go away or feel forced to add adverts. So now I have soooo many icon slots. I've added several from a first trawl through the icon communities, but if anyone has any they would like to recommend, I'd love to see them :)

Off to a Christmas market in Ely cathedral this lunchtime (trying to get in and out on our lunch hour.) This is always the start of the Christmas season for us, and often a good place to buy presents for people like Daughter's in-laws, who we don't really know well enough to ask for a wishlist.

Looking forward to it! I can't drink mulled wine any more, but I can sniff it. And I can at least still eat a mince pie.

On other news, another chapter of Wedded Bliss will be up imminently, as soon as I can get it off the laptop and into A03. Now there's only the marriage ceremony to write, so I should have the fic finished next week.

Anyone got any prompts for The Untamed they want written next? Ideally with Jin Guangyao as a major player, since he is my evil little dude.

Ooh, thank you! I'm very annoying in the sense that I don't really know what I'm looking for, but more Untamed ones are always good. As are Murderbot, Tolkien, Stargate Universe... Ooh, maybe a Blue-Eyed Samurai or two. Belly dancing. Also text ... whatever :) What kind of things do you usually like?

I pretty much do anything that catches my eye.

I admit to not watching all of The Untamed but I do have an idea for something.

Do you like the LoTR movies? The Alan Lee art could make some nice icons too.

Thank you so much for those! They are gorgeous, and I really like having the Untamed title on an icon. It is so elegant :) I do like the LotR movies - the scenery and props and effects are amazing, although the actors don't really match up with the ideas I have of the characters. I had lived with the book characters for thirty odd years before the movies came out, and some of their casting choices really puzzled me. #notmyElrond! The Alan Lee art is flawless though. I'm such a fan of his :)

Ooh, those are gorgeous! Thank you so much! You're very talented. I love the old fashioned belly dancer. Where is she from? And the Untamed calligraphy is very striking. And Lan Wangji's eye with that frosty effect over the top of it. I really like the Lan blue you have on all three of those. Fantastic! Thank you so much :)

The eye was almost a straight up screencap. I just put a bit of dazzle on it and the belly dancer was from google. Glad you liked them.

I kind of want an Alan Lee icon for myself now. We'll see if I can find something that translates well.

I have a couple of Brian Froud icons which I made myself, as I love what he does with the more folklore type elves, but Alan Lee is definitely the master when it comes to Tolkien's elves. That but in the Fellowship of the Ring movie where they see the procession of elves leaving for the sea was a perfect rendition of an Alan Lee painting and is one of the reasons why that's my favourite of the three movies.

I should use my icons more than I do... I'm not as used to it as I was back on ye olde eljay, so I mostly stick with my default, unless it's something fandom-specific.

I had a random paid account generously gifted to me, and I hope to maintain having it, because I DO very much want to support DW as I can.

No, I've noticed that there isn't such a culture of using icons to subtly comment on posts here on DW as there was on LJ. I tend to fall back to my default as well, although I wonder if that is because I don't yet have hundreds to choose from? Maybe if I had more that lent themselves to commentary I could relearn how to use them for it.

The Christmas market was great, thanks! We managed to get gifts for Daughter's in laws and Gran, so we only have Brother-in-law and his family left.

I think DW actually undersell themselves - I'd have paid for an account long ago, if I didn't find their points system confusing. And all their prices are in dollars. Even when I've paid (just sent them some cash) I still don't know how much it will be in pounds.

And there's a minimum number of points that you can gift to other people.

It's the irritating feeling of "I really want to support them, but I wish they'd make it a bit more straightforward."

I bet many people wouldn't even know where to look in order to pay them....

It's probably not even terribly apparent at first look that you can get a paid account at all :) I only knew because it was similar to LJ's set up and I made my first account over here when we thought LJ was going down. Although I agree that the points thing seems entirely unnecessary, it may be getting round some kind of legal requirement from whatever US state the servers are in. idk - it certainly doesn't seem like the sort of thing they'd have done and kept just for the sake of it!

That's also very true. I was on LJ before DW and occasionally bought icons for friends. So I was aware there was a way to pay.

DW really need to advertise themselves, even if it's only very gently, once in a while.

An occasional banner ad across the top like they do on Ao3 would be fine.
