galadhir: Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen have their heads bent together looking at something out of frame (xiyao)

It's very odd how it always seems to go this way: You write what you think is one of your best fics ever, and it gets absolute silence from readers. You write a throwaway thing that you don't think is much good, and it gets more comments than you could have imagined.

I'm currently doing the first thing of those. I think 'Visitation' is really good. And more than that, I'm actually enjoying writing it to the extent that I am excited about it and rotating it in my head like I used to do with stories back when I was a proper writer. But I post it and... crickets.

Meanwhile I've just come off what I thought was a rather pointless piece of kid-fic, and that was getting twenty comments per chapter.

And it wouldn't matter so much if I had any idea what made one more popular than the other. Is it just that this one is in Xichen's pov instead of Jin Guangyao's? Is it that JGY is dead in this one, and it might take him a few years to come back? IDK. I cannot have become a worse writer in the space of the two weeks between one fic and the next, so it must be the subject matter and not me, but it is a bit baffling and discouraging.

Never mind. Visitation is for me, so I'm going to continue to write it for me. Whether I continue to post it or not is another matter.

Gosh there are now so many people posting over here that it took me several hours to get to the bottom of my Reading Page! How cool! The more people talking over here, the less need there is to go anywhere else :)

Hello to everyone I've added today! It's great to have you on board.

Finished and posted chapter two of my Untamed fic Wedded Bliss, which is itself a tie in to my previous Untamed fic the same last name and the same coloured eyes.. After ten years of writing a minimum of 2000 words a day, followed by about five years of total writing block, I'm now finding a pace of 500 words a day doable and enjoyable.

The long term plan is to write a new novel, but for now getting my writing muscles working again by fanfic seems like a gentle way to get back into the swing of things.

Woohoo! Chapter ten is up today. Only four more to go and it will be complete (and I'll actually be able to listen to this story from start to finish - the main reason why I started podficcing it in the first place.)

Chapter 10: A Rope That Wears Thin
Summary:

If the journey so far is any indication, memories will come unbidden, and he can do nothing but receive them at their whim.

In his weakest moments, Meng Yao wishes he didn’t remember a thing.

Wishes it could just be this: handsome, kind Lan Xichen and himself, traveling the land without horrors weighing on their hearts. Spending the days close and the nights closer.

Getting lured back to Tumblr by all the Untamed content over there. Mostly going through the blogs of Jin Guangyao stans and reblogging everything - basically being irritating to two websites at once. But this time I'm going to post about it here, so I don't just end up fading out again.

The Untamed/MDZS fandom must be the largest I've ever been in, and that includes the Tolkien fandom, and it is absolutely bursting with really great fic. Quite a lot of which is even Jin Guangyao centric. Of course I've done my usual thing of gravitating to a widely controversial character rather than nestling happily in the main pairing, which cuts down my reading choices somewhat. But I don't think I could ever be content shipping a pairing for which the canon had already come through. What is left for the fan writer to fix in those cases? Much harder to give JGY a happy ending, especially if you also want everyone else (except Jin Guangshan, he can die) to live and be happy too. But that's what makes it fun.

I'm currently in the middle of podficcing Shiome's Last of our kind, for which I can just about manage to produce a chapter a week. There are 14 chapters and I've done 8. So that should be finished in February. After which, I'm in a quandary as to whether I podfic Derillarch's Peony to Lotus series, or whether I attempt to finish the story I started writing months and months ago.

(That's 'The Will of Heaven', in which JGY comes back to life the same way WWX did, and must attempt to become Lan Furen while fooling the rest of the cultivation world that he is someone else entirely, or else deal with the consequences.)

There is so much good fic out there that it doesn't seem like the fandom needs mine. But there are not very many JGY centric podfics, so I do almost feel like I can make a bigger difference by podficcing than by writing, atm.

Chapter 6

Meng Yao frowns, his brain clattering to a halt. “You think my arm is haunted?”

CWs: non-descriptive medical procedures... and an exorcism! :)

Notes:

I must have been very tired when I recorded this one because I had to edit out a full quarter of it where I was audibly breathing, yawning or coughing. When I complained as much to the folks on Mastodon [personal profile] bluedreaming@fandom.ink sent me a meme saying "Get rid of the breaths! We can't let people know we breathe!" Which is now my new motto

Bane of my life this week - the word 'zither.'
