What is a topic you could stand up and talk passionately about for five minutes?
Any number of fandom opinions:
- Why we shouldn't overlook Celeborn of Lorien when we talk about Galadriel, and why everybody still does.
- Why Colonel Young from Stargate SGU is actually the right man for the job even though he himself doesn't think so.
- Why some people love the villains in media and why it doesn't make them villains themselves.
A few non-fannish subjects:
- The history and typology of morris dancing - I regularly do give a talk about this.
- The history of Roses and Castles painting and how to do it yourself - I have taught a class on this too.
- Anglo-Saxon clothing and how to construct it - I might be a bit rusty on this one if I was asked to go into depth but I can easily fill 5 minutes.

Date: 2026-03-25 07:43 pm (UTC)A whole range of things:
Gardening, how to plan an allotment, climate change, how to reduce your carbon footprint, morris dancing, sword dancing, children, etc.
Heck, I once remember (at a programme item at a Redemption convention) managing to talk with passion for several minutes on a totally tongue in cheek artistic appreciation of a paper cup (having been given the topic a few seconds before).
The aesthetics of the shape, it's sexual symbology, some of it is still in my memory decades later!
I think I mostly remember it so much becuase the other people there hadn't really understood that the idea was a piss-take of art critics who go overboard on gushing about things while saying nothing of any significance whatsoever.
